Urdu and Unicode

Unicode is the future for Urdu and indeed any language in the world which needs to be represented digitally. To me Unicode represents a break from all the proprietary encoding formats used for Urdu before and a future in which all Urdu users will be able to share information freely with each other irregardless of what platform they use. Linux has been using Unicode for years and finally its Windows turn to catch up. Oh and Mac users aren't far behind as well ;)
As a word of note may I say that even though you can now save filenames with urdu textnames please do not do so as many programs etc WinZip, Nero etc do not support them.
I won't say much about Unicode here because there are people out there who have said it better then me. However seeing that I am pushing for a move towards Unicode in the Urdu community I will present here some links and resources which you can look up for your own research and curiosity.

Unicode Consortium
Alan Wood’s Unicode Resources
Multilingual Unicode TrueType Fonts
SimRedo Java Unicode Editor
Windows XP Support for Unicode
Urdu Scratchpad
Tabish's Urdu Page

The font which I will mainly use for Urdu Unicode support is Tahoma because it is the one with the  best support for Arabic/Urdu so far. Arial might be a jack of all trades but sadly is master at none :(
Windows 9x wishing to make WebPages from the Unicode font are advised to use either U-Trans or Urdu Scratchpad or the brilliant program Unipad. Unipad doesn't have a Urdu Phonetic layout but it does have a Sindhi keyboard layout for you to download or if you wish you can make your own phonetic layout. Out of the two proprietary solutions available to Windows 9x users I personally prefer Urdu Scratchpad because it is more versatile and easier to use. However if you want to type unicode properly and be able to use it anywhere I would recommend Unipad.
If you are using Windows XP/2000 they can use Notepad or Word/FrontPage 2000 onwards (BTW if you are using Word 2000 to create web pages and are finding your pages slow to download then download this utility which will fix the bug for you by removing un-needed HTML tags: Office 2000 HTML Filter 2.0).
If you are using Unix/Linux then may I point you to a program called SimRedo. It supports the Arabic keyset irregardless of whether or not your system has it installed. The more established editor in case you do not know of it is yudit.
I know also of another program called BabelPad which works well under Windows 2000. I do not know not know how it works under Win 9x. It might work for you. Let me know if it does.
